Information
The Union of
Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, the country neighboring in the
east and north with Thailand, Laos and China, in the west and
south with India, Bangladesh and Bay of Bengal, which has an
area of 678,500 sq. km, is strategically located near major
Indian Ocean shipping lanes. Forests and woodland cover 49% of
the country, capital is Nay Pyi Taw. Yangon city was and is
still playing an important role in the nation’s social and
economic development.
Myanmar's
natural resources include petroleum, timber, tin, antimony,
zinc, copper, tungsten, lead, coal, some marble, limestone,
precious stones, natural gas and hydropower. Agriculture
products are paddy rice, corn, oilseed, sugarcane, pulses and
hardwood. Myanmar's industries include agricultural processing,
textiles and footwear, wood and wood products, copper, tin,
tungsten, iron, construction materials, pharmaceuticals and
fertilizers.
The standard
unit of local currency is Kyat, with Pyar as subsidiary unit.
One Kyat equals hundred Pyars. Kyat and Pyar are issued both in
notes and coins. Time in Myanmar is 6:30 hours ahead of
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
Since 1988,
market reforms have been successively introduced, moving the
country away from centrally controlled, socialist oriented
economy. Most of the private sectors are being encouraged, and
slowly move to and forming market oriented economy system. Which
is now includes changes being preceded in the shipping industry,
but still try to upgrade for proper document procedure for
import shipment between the authorities and private sector.
Container Terminals.
There are four
container terminals in Yangon, Myanmar International Terminal
Thilawa (MITT), Bo Aung Kyaw Terminal (BSW), Myanmar Industrial
Port Terminal (MIPT) and Asia World Port Terminal (AWPT), some
of the terminals have modern port facilities, but all those have
basic facilities to handle containers. 45 footer container is
not recommended to ship into Yangon.

Information of Import Shipment (Sea freight).
At present,
authority recognizes only two parties to submit the manifest for
inward cargoes, they are Myanmar Five Star Line and Shipping
Agency Department, so called “SAD” which operates under Myanmar
Port Authority. So as afore mentioned two parties are only the
organizations those who can issue Delivery Order to port and
respective Consignee. No other offices of vessel operators or
freight forwarders are allowed file manifest directly to customs
house or right to issue delivery order to any port operators.
International
Airports
There
are several International Airports in Myanmar, and Yangon
International Airport is still major gate way to Myanmar for
most of regular Airliners.
